Scythian Weaponry

To be discussed:

Bows & arrows

The most recognizable weapon of the Scythians (and other mounted archers from the Eurasian steppes) is the recurve bow, a weapon made out of composite pieces of horn, wood, and sinew. Its shape (with limbs that curved in an arc opposite to that of the central arc) allowed for a smaller overall bow length—which facilitated its use on horseback.

Gorytos combination bow case & quiver

A common item accompanying bow use is the quiver—or, in the case of the mounted Scythian archer, the gorytos, a combination quiver and bow-case. While shapes and styles varied, frequently the gorytos had at least two main compartments (one for the bow, one for arrows). Sometimes, protective felt gorytos covers, to slip over the top of a gorytos, have been found in Altai-region burials. Some gorytoi were constructed out of leather or metal (or metal-covered leather), sometimes with a wooden spine along one length of the case.

Swords

Several "long" swords (30+ inches in length) have been found in assorted burials.

Daggers / akinakes

More frequently found than longer swords, the dagger or short sword known as the akinakes was commonly used by Scythians in the Pontic steppes.

Two footman on the Solokha comb are wielding an akinakes as they approach the horseman between them.
